#eBooks #sale #bookhaul – Today’s books are three new Kindle eBooks that were on sale this week. On Mother’s Day I picked up, That Kind of Mother by Rumaan Alam for $2.99; the price has returned to $12.99. This title has been on my radar and it was heavily buzzed for Mother’s Day. Thrilled to have picked it up on sale! Yesterday I saw that The City of Brass by S.A. Charkraborty and The Bear and the Nightingale by Kathrine Arden were on sale for $1.99, so I hurried over to Amazon to pick up the Kindle eBook. As of this post, they are still both $1.99. Book of the Month sold out of The City of Brass and I was heartbroken to have waited to long to order it. I should have made it my book of the month! I was on the library eBook hold list, but now I own it! Yay! I have heard The Bear and the Nightingale recommended to fans of The Night Circus , so it has been on my TBR for a longtime. I sort of want to wait until winter, to read it in the cold, but that is a LONG time ...

What Are You Reading?” hosted by  Book Date WEEK 20 Books I Expect (Hope) to Finish This Week The Twelve-Mile Straight by Eleanor Henderson Only a few chapters into this book and already it is heart-breaking. It is a powerful reminder of the African-American experience half a century after the end of the Civil War. 1930’s Georgia is a difficult place for African-Americans and women, and intensely difficult for African-American women. Before starting the book, my concern was that the violence and suffering of the characters would overwhelm my ability to enjoy reading; pleased to report that this is not the case and I am eager to finish the story. The library due date is tomorrow and there are five other people on hold, so there is even more incentive to read it now! Thoughts as I read Station Eleven • I love this story and about 50 pages or so from the end, I marvel at the author’s ability to weave all the threads in the story together, so gracefully, like a tapestry finally being revealed. • Advice : don’t take long breaks. I read this with long breaks in between reading sessions, which was a horrible way to read such an intricate story. It would be better to set aside a weekend or a day and read cover for cover. I hope to have the I luxury to do so, one day soon. Thoughts after finishing Stations Eleven • Advice after finishing the book: surrender to the uncertainties in style and form because the author masterfully brings the ends together. Also be willing to surrender to the uncertainty of the story, go along with a new thread or character, even if it seem disjointed to start with, because the author slowly erases the uncertainty and shows how the pieces all fit together. • Each character has so much to unpack and examine, it wou...

Graphic novels are not usually in my wheelhouse. In fact, I am pretty sure these will be the very first graphic novels I read. But I have heard so many wonderful things about both, and I think reading both with my daughter might bring up some lovely conversations about being kind to others and accepting of our own differences.  The ghost is just a lovely illustration that has been floating around our home since Halloween.

So much has changed in just 3 days! (1) The Essex Serpent library eBook became available for check out and I did it! (2) I purchased The Female Persuasion at Barnes & Nobles for 40% off because it was the May Book Club read for the B&N Store Book Club. The bookseller at the register said that the meet-up was great and many people enjoyed the book. (3) Library Haul!!! I had an opportunity to stop by my local library on Friday afternoon on the way home, during their open hours, to pick up a book I had on hold. So now I have Battleborn . At my daughter’s request, I picked up two additional Star Darling titles. I took a few pictures of new middle grade fiction that I want to keep in mind to check out on the future. I also hustled over to the adult new fiction and picked up Her Body and Other Parties and The Last Equation of Issac Severy , which might be my very first mystery book. It is a genre I normally ignore because I do not want to read psychological thrill...

2018 is my YEAR OF READING and May is the first month for which I prepared a list of books to read before the month started; though posting before the month begins remains a challenge. Thus far in 2018, I have been reading without a road map, trying to go through titles quickly but still enjoy the experience. After five months, I feel comfortable setting a challenging pace. At the top of the list are books that I am anxious to finish. Nestled in the middle are eBooks from my library holds list that I have already checked out and need to finish or else I will wind up at the end of the queue again! At the bottom of the list are books I want to read, but I own the hard copy, so these titles often end up in the TBR pile for longer than I planned .
